Honestly, I can’t think of a good reason to not buy these. I mean the owner is asking $2000 for two 1980 Mercedes 450SL roadsters.

Kinja'd!!!

The brown one is in pretty good shape. From what I can see (and what he told me) it needs:

-Rust on the gas cap door fixed,

AC restored (my biggest fear regarding the car) which probably means having all the seals replaced and switching it to r134a since I doubt 12 is available anymore.

Bushings replaced because the steering has too much play in it. He said the car runs straight but the steering wheel floats a bit.

Sun visors are toast and need restored.

It started right up. I’m going to go back next week and test drive it. Hopefully it won’t be raining so I can take the hardtop off to look at the condition of the soft top (he says it is in good shape though). But it looks like it just needs a safety and the registration done to be road worthy.

The grey one is a probably just for parts as it has some quite a bit of body rust, including a hole in the passenger door skin.

On the plus side it has a Recaro seat for the driver which I guess I could probably sell.

So I’m not really certain why he is selling it at $2000; he says he just needs the space for other projects. It was licensed by him at one point I could see the registration card, so I tend to believe him. He also had 3 Rolls Royces, a Nash Rambler, 2 SLK Roadsters, a 1940s Fire truck, and various Chrysler Sebrings (I don’t get it either).

So does anybody think that Brown 450SL is not worth $2k? Low prices seem to be in the $6k range for them.

A German Saloon from the 70’s? I would totally tap that and buy those. Art of the flip, yo.

The only time I’ve ever seen r107’s that cheap is on not running parts only condition. Good deal.

Good to know. The grey one supposedly runs, but it had a bunch of crap piled all around it and I couldn’t even open the doors.

Any clue on how much getting AC working might average?

1980, but I suppose it was made in 1979. And Art of the flip is what it will be after a month or two. Though keeping one is tempting.

I don’t doubt that it does run.

Umm... This could vary greatly depending on what’s actually wrong. Maybe just charging it will do the trick. You could go the crazy cheap, shadetree-style fix where you just pick up conversion fittings and pump it up with a couple of one-time-use DIY refrigerant cans; maybe $100 at most for that. Or Maybe the compressor is junk and the evaporator is leaking, in which case you’re looking at more than 10 hours labor easy and well over a grand in parts (new). Start with a charge and see how it goes. Some shops still have R12 machines.

It looks like money in your pocket, even if one ends up being a parts car.

Nice Price.

Keep Oppo SL Classy.
